Antimicrobial Peptides Development

The emergence of antibiotic-resistant pathogens worldwide poses a serious threat to human health care systems. Very limited progress has been made in recent years in the development of new potent antibiotics, so we need new drug development strategies to overcome superbugs. Some promising natural product candidates are antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) from various organisms, which represent some of the possible solutions against superbugs.

AMPs to Combat Resistant Bacteria

AMP is an important candidate for the development of novel antibiotics. AMPs are a diverse class of molecules that serve as a first line of defense against microbial threats. More than two thousand AMPs have been identified and isolated from a wide range of organisms, including plants, insects, amphibians, humans, and even bacteria.

Our service is to help researchers find natural AMPs, explore their mechanisms of antimicrobial activity, and optimize antimicrobial activity and minimize toxicity and production costs, using AMP as a natural model for developing novel antibiotics in the future.

Various Antimicrobial Peptide Development Services

  • A large number of AMPs have been discovered in the animal life community. The diversity of these peptides, which are integral to the innate defense mechanisms of animals, also makes them a rich source for the discovery of drug candidates. Based on the abundance of AMPs in animals, we can provide development services to isolate and characterize AMPs that can be used against superbug infections.
  • Plant AMPs are a group of small biologically active proteins produced in plants. Plants are a promising source of AMPs and are important as the next generation of antibiotics against superbugs. We help find novel AMPs distributed in the plant kingdom by providing information collected and provide future directions for further research on possible use in the treatment of drug-resistant bacterial infections in humans.
  • Microbial produced AMPs have been a hot topic of research and many ribosomal and non-ribosomal synthesized peptides have been reported in the last few years. We focus on recent advances in microbial produced AMPs to provide scientists with research services applied to the treatment of drug-dependent resistance in target strains.
  • Modification and design are hot spots in the research of AMPs in order to improve their performance. We provide research services focused on modifying the structure, hydrophobicity, amphipathicity and charge of natural AMP sequences by modifying and designing them to improve antimicrobial activity and specificity while reducing cytotoxicity to address application limitations.
  • Efficient and safe delivery of AMP plays a key role in the fight against drug-resistant bacterial infections. Appropriate delivery systems are expected to eliminate the limitations of toxicity and poor stability normally associated with natural AMP. We provide services for the development of delivery systems for AMPs.

Our Discovery and Design Strategies

We currently use two general strategies to obtain peptide candidates. First, starting candidates can be identified from a peptide library. Second, candidate peptides can be designed based on the structure of the target molecule.

  • Library screening. Filter or search for candidate libraries from natural or man-made sources.
  • Structure-based design. Use the cornerstone technology developed with conventional antibiotics.
